As a passionate food blogger, discovering the versatility of the air fryer has been a game-changer. From crispy fries to perfectly baked desserts, this appliance has become my absolute go-to. It consistently delivers amazing results with minimal fuss, making it ideal for busy individuals and families who want delicious food without the long prep or cook times. These Air Fryer Mummy Brownies are a testament to how simple and fun air frying can be, especially when crafting holiday-themed treats.

While you certainly can use your favorite homemade brownie recipe, our goal for this particular Halloween delight was maximum ease and speed. That’s why we opted for a high-quality brownie box mix. It streamlines the baking process, ensuring perfect fudgy brownies every time, allowing you to focus on the creative decoration part. Who doesn’t love a shortcut that doesn’t compromise on taste?

For the ultimate fudgy texture and a striking contrast with the white “mummy wraps,” I chose a Dark Chocolate Ghirardelli brownie mix. The deep, rich chocolate flavor perfectly complements the sweet decorations. And speaking of decorations, no mummy is complete without those hilariously adorable candy eyeballs and the iconic white chocolate or frosting strips that bring our little edible monsters to life! These brownies are sure to be a hit with kids and adults alike.

What You’ll Need to Create Air Fryer Mummy Brownies

Making these delightful mummy brownies in your air fryer is straightforward, but it helps to have the right tools and ingredients ready. I personally use my Cosori 5.8 Quart air fryer for this recipe. One important tip: if you’re using a standard box brownie mix, you’ll likely need to split the batter into two batches or use a smaller pan that fits comfortably in your air fryer. This ensures even cooking and perfect results. If you have a larger air fryer with a compatible pan, you might be able to cook a full batch, but be prepared for potentially longer cooking times.

Ingredients needed to make brownie mummies. Mix, oil, egg, water, candy eyes, and melting chocolate.

Essential Ingredients:

  • 1 Box (approx. 18 oz) Brownie Mix (Dark chocolate recommended for contrast!)
  • Water (as per brownie mix instructions)
  • Egg (as per brownie mix instructions)
  • Vegetable Oil (as per brownie mix instructions)
  • Candy Eyeballs: These are key for the mummy’s expression!
  • White Frosting, White Chocolate Chips, or White Chocolate Candy Melts: For the iconic mummy wrap.

Equipment:

  • Air Fryer (Any model will work, adjust cooking time as needed)
  • Small Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk or Spoon
  • Air Fryer Safe Baking Dish (e.g., a 6×6 inch square pan)
  • Parchment Paper (optional, but highly recommended)
  • Microwave-safe bowl (for melting chocolate)
  • Spoon or Piping Bag (for drizzling)

How to Make Spooky Air Fryer Mummy Brownies

Creating these mummy masterpieces is a breeze. Follow these simple steps for perfectly baked brownies and fun, festive decorations!

Step 1: Prepare the Brownie Batter
In a large mixing bowl, combine your chosen brownie mix with the required water, vegetable oil, and egg, as indicated on your box mix package. Stir everything together until the ingredients are just combined and smooth. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are fine and often lead to fudgier brownies.

Step 2: Prepare Your Baking Dish
Lightly coat the bottom and sides of your air fryer-safe baking dish with nonstick cooking spray, butter, or vegetable oil. For an even easier removal, line the pan with a piece of parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides. This creates “handles” to lift the baked brownies out effortlessly.

Step 3: Air Fry the Brownies
Pour the brownie batter into your prepared baking dish. Place the dish carefully into your air fryer basket. Air fry at 370°F (185°C) for 10-12 minutes. Brownie baking times can vary significantly based on your air fryer’s wattage and the size/material of your pan. For thicker brownies or different air fryer models, you might need to add an additional 1-2 minutes at a time until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs, but not wet batter. The center should feel set.

Step 4: Cool and Cut
Once baked, carefully remove the brownie pan from the air fryer and let the brownies cool completely. This step is crucial for achieving clean cuts. Once cool, cut the brownies into small rectangles, roughly 2×3 inches in size. Place the cut brownies on a piece of parchment paper or a plate, ready for decorating.

Step 5: Decorate Your Mummy Brownies
Now for the fun part! If using white chocolate chips or candy melts, place them in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until completely melted and smooth. For frosting, you can either use a piping bag with a small round tip or simply a spoon. Drizzle the melted white chocolate or frosting over each brownie in a crisscross pattern, creating the “mummy wrap” effect. Be sure to leave a small space at one end of the brownie where you’ll place the candy eyeballs. Gently press two candy eyeballs into the undrizzled area to give your mummy its adorable, spooky stare. Allow the chocolate or frosting to set before serving.

Tips for Perfect Air Fryer Mummy Brownies

  • Don’t Overfill Your Pan: To ensure even cooking and prevent uneven texture, only fill your baking dish about two-thirds full with batter. This is especially important in an air fryer, where airflow is key.
  • Cool Completely: Resist the urge to cut and decorate warm brownies! Warm brownies are crumbly and won’t hold their shape for decorating. Patience is a virtue here.
  • Parchment Paper is Your Friend: Lining your pan with parchment paper not only makes for easy removal but also helps prevent the edges from over-browning while the center cooks.
  • Decoration Techniques: For a clean mummy wrap, use a piping bag with a small round tip. If you don’t have one, a Ziploc bag with a tiny corner snipped off works wonders! A simple spoon also creates a charming, rustic mummy look.
  • Make it a Family Activity: This recipe is fantastic for getting kids involved in the kitchen. Let them help drizzle the chocolate and place the candy eyes – they’ll love creating their own spooky treats!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Do I have to use a specific kind of box brownie mix?

Not at all! The beauty of this recipe is its flexibility. While I love a dark chocolate mix for the visual contrast, you can use any variety you prefer. Chewy brownie mix, fudgy brownie mix, even a peanut butter brownie mix would all work wonderfully. Just follow the package directions for the wet ingredients.

What are other options for making the mummy wrap?

The possibilities are endless! Beyond white chocolate chips, candy melts, or store-bought white frosting, you can get creative. Consider using colored candy melts (orange or green for a Frankenstein-ish mummy!), milk chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, or even melted cherry chips for a unique flavor twist. You could also make your own simple confectioners’ sugar glaze (powdered sugar, a little milk, and vanilla extract) for a thinner, quicker-setting wrap.

Are cooking times the same for box mix brownies and homemade brownies in an air fryer?

Generally, I’ve found the cooking times to be quite similar for both box mix and many homemade brownie recipes, especially if they have a similar batter consistency. However, cooking times can vary depending on the thickness of the batter in your baking dish, the specific ingredients used (e.g., more fat or liquid might alter cooking slightly), and, as always, your air fryer’s wattage and model. Always check for doneness by inserting a toothpick and adjust cooking time as needed.

Can I make these Air Fryer Mummy Brownies ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can bake the brownies up to 2-3 days in advance and store them in an airtight container at room temperature. Then, decorate them closer to when you plan to serve. Once decorated, the brownies can also be stored in an airtight container for 2-3 days. If using frosting, they might keep a little longer than if using melted chocolate, which can sometimes become a bit sticky over time, though they will still be delicious.

How should I store leftover Mummy Brownies?

Store any leftover mummy brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days. To prevent the decorations from sticking together, you can place a piece of parchment paper between layers if stacking them. While they can be refrigerated, brownies tend to dry out in the fridge, so room temperature storage is generally best for maintaining their fudgy texture.

These Air Fryer Mummy Brownies are more than just a dessert; they’re a fun and engaging way to celebrate the spooky season. Their ease of preparation and adorable appearance make them a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. So grab your air fryer, a box of brownie mix, and get ready to create some unforgettable Halloween magic!

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • Square Baking Dish

Ingredients

  • 1
    Box
    Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate Brownie Mix

  • 1/4
    cup
    water

  • 1/2
    cup
    vegetable oil

  • 1
    large
    egg

Mummy Wrap

  • 6
    ounces
    white melting chocolates

  • 1
    package
    candy eyeballs

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the brownie mix with water, oil, and the egg. Stir together until ingredients are well blended.
  • Pour the brownie batter into a lightly sprayed or parchment-lined baking dish suitable for your air fryer.
  • Air Fry at 370° Fahrenheit (185°C) for 10-12 minutes. Brownie baking time may vary depending on your air fryer wattage and size. You may need to add 1-2 minutes at a time until the center is firm and a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs.
  • Once the brownies are done, allow them to cool completely. Then, cut the brownies into small rectangles about 2×3 inches in size. Place the brownies on a piece of parchment paper or on a plate.
  • Prepare the white melting chocolates by placing them in a microwave-safe bowl and heating for 30-second intervals, stirring until completely melted and smooth.
  • Use a spoon or a piping bag to drizzle the melted white chocolate (or frosting) over the brownies. Create a crisscross pattern, ensuring you leave a small clear space at one end of the brownie for the candy eyeballs.
  • Immediately add two candy eyeballs to the clear space on each brownie. Allow the chocolate to cool and set completely before serving.

Notes

  • To prepare the baking dish, lightly coat the bottom of the pan with nonstick cooking spray, butter or vegetable oil. You can also line the pan with a piece of parchment paper which makes it much easier to lift the brownies out of the pan.
  • You can also use frosting to make the Crisscross pattern across the brownies. I usually keep enough confectioners sugar on hand to make my own frosting, but to keep this recipe simple, I purchased pre-made frosting.
  • I used a 6×6 inch pan and was able to make two batches with one box mix, yielding 12 mummy brownies. If your air fryer or pan size is different, adjust accordingly.
