Essential Air Fryer Pop Tart Ingredients

Crafting perfect homemade pop tarts doesn’t require a long list of obscure ingredients. In fact, the beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. With just a few staple items, you can create a batch of these delightful pastries. Here’s what you’ll need to get started on your air fryer pop tart adventure:

Ingredients needed to make pop tarts, crust, jam filling, powdered sugar and milk for the glaze.
  • Refrigerated Pie Crust: This is your secret weapon for making quick and easy air fryer pop tarts. Pre-made pie crust provides the perfect flaky, golden-brown base without the hassle of making dough from scratch. It’s readily available in the refrigerated section of most grocery stores and ensures a consistently delicious texture every time. Look for brands known for good quality for the best results.
  • Strawberry Jam: Our chosen fruity filling for this classic recipe. Strawberry jam offers a wonderfully sweet and slightly tart flavor that perfectly complements the buttery crust. While we love strawberry, feel free to use your favorite fruit jam! Options like raspberry, blueberry, or even a mixed berry blend work beautifully. For a reliably delicious strawberry jam, a classic like Smucker’s is a great choice.

Simple Glaze Ingredients

No pop tart is complete without a sweet, creamy glaze. This simple frosting adds an extra layer of sweetness and a beautiful finish to your homemade creations. Here’s what you’ll need for the glaze:

  • Powdered Sugar: Also known as confectioners’ sugar, this fine sugar dissolves easily to create a smooth, lump-free glaze.
  • Milk: A small amount of milk helps thin the powdered sugar into a pourable consistency. You can use any type of milk – dairy or non-dairy – depending on your preference.
  • Sprinkles: Completely optional, but highly recommended for that classic, fun pop tart look! Choose colorful sprinkles to add a festive touch.

Optional Fillings: These air fryer berry pop tarts are just the beginning! You can easily customize your fillings. A few of our favorite alternative fillings include rich brown sugar cinnamon, tangy raspberry jam, and creamy chocolate hazelnut spread like Nutella. Don’t be afraid to get creative!

How to Make Homemade Pop Tarts in an Air Fryer

Making homemade pop tarts in your air fryer is a straightforward process that yields incredibly delicious results. Follow these simple steps to create perfect, flaky, and filled pastries every time.

STEP 1: Prepare the Pie Crust. Remove the refrigerated pie crust from its packaging and gently unroll it onto a lightly floured surface or a clean cutting board. Using a rolling pin, carefully roll the pie crust into a large, even rectangular shape. The goal is to make it slightly thinner and more uniform, which will result in crispier pop tarts. Once rolled, use a pizza cutter or a sharp knife to cut the dough into individual rectangles, approximately 3×5 inches. Aim for consistent sizing to ensure even cooking.

STEP 2: Add the Filling. On half of your dough rectangles, spoon about 1 tablespoon of your chosen jam (strawberry, in this case) into the center. Gently spread the jam, making sure to leave a clear ¼-inch border around all the edges. This border is crucial for sealing the pop tarts properly and preventing the jam from leaking out during cooking, which can lead to a sticky mess in your air fryer basket.

STEP 3: Moisten the Edges for Sealing. Fill a small bowl with warm water. Lightly dip your finger into the water and carefully run it along the ¼-inch border of the jam-filled dough rectangles. This creates a slightly sticky surface that acts as a “glue,” helping the top pastry layer adhere securely to the bottom layer. This step is key to ensuring your pop tarts remain sealed and prevent the filling from oozing out during air frying.

STEP 4: Assemble and Seal. Gently place a plain dough rectangle on top of each jam-filled, moistened rectangle. Carefully align the edges. Then, using your fingers, pinch all the edges together to seal them. For an extra secure seal and that classic pop tart look, use the tines of a fork to crimp all around the edges. Before air frying, use the fork to poke several small holes in the top of each pastry. These ventilation holes are essential; they allow steam to escape while cooking, preventing the pop tarts from puffing up excessively or bursting open.

STEP 5: Maximize Your Dough. Continue the process of filling and sealing until all your initial pastry rectangles are used. Don’t waste the trimmed dough! Gather any leftover scraps, gently combine them, re-roll them into another rectangle, and cut out more 3×5 inch pieces. This method typically yields an additional 3-4 full air fryer pop tarts, ensuring minimal waste and more delicious treats.

STEP 6: Prepare the Air Fryer Basket. Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier. Alternatively, you can lightly spray the basket with a nonstick cooking spray. Carefully arrange the prepared pastries in a single layer within the basket. Avoid overcrowding, as this can lead to uneven cooking and less crispy results. You may need to cook them in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.

STEP 7: Air Fry to Golden Perfection. Cook the pastries in your air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 8-10 minutes. Keep a close eye on them during the last few minutes, as air fryer cooking times can vary. You’re looking for edges that are beautifully crispy and a golden-brown color across the top. Once cooked, carefully remove the hot pastries from the air fryer and transfer them to a wire rack. Allow them to cool completely before applying the glaze or enjoying them warm. Cooling ensures the glaze sets properly and helps the pastry maintain its crispness.

Easy Glaze Directions

Creating the perfect glaze for your air fryer pop tarts is the final touch that adds a professional and delicious finish. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the powdered sugar and milk. Use a spoon or a small whisk to gently stir the ingredients until they are completely smooth and free of lumps. The glaze should be shiny and creamy, thick enough to coat a spoon but thin enough to drizzle. If it’s too thick, add a tiny bit more milk (half a teaspoon at a time). If it’s too thin, whisk in a bit more powdered sugar. Once your pop tarts have cooled, generously drizzle the glaze over them and add sprinkles if desired. Allow the glaze to set for a few minutes before serving.

Expert Tips for Perfect Air Fryer Pop Tarts

Achieving perfectly crisp, golden, and leak-free homemade pop tarts in your air fryer is simple with a few key tips:

  • Enhance the Seal with an Egg Wash: For extra insurance against leaks and to achieve a beautiful golden sheen, consider using an egg wash. Beat one egg with a tablespoon of water in a small bowl. Before placing the top pastry layer, brush this egg wash around the bottom edge of your jam-filled pastry piece. This creates superior adhesion, ensuring your homemade pop tarts remain perfectly sealed during the air frying process.
  • Crucial Ventilation: Never forget to poke holes in the top pastry layer before cooking! These small perforations act as vents, allowing steam to escape from the filling as the pop tart bakes. Without proper ventilation, the steam can build up, causing the pastries to puff excessively or even burst open, leading to a messy air fryer and a less appealing pop tart. I recommend poking holes in the top, middle, and bottom sections of the pop tart for uniform steam release.
  • Mind Your Air Fryer Model: Air fryers can vary significantly in size, wattage, and heating elements. The cooking times provided in this recipe are a general guideline. Always keep an eye on your pop tarts, especially towards the end of the cooking cycle. Depending on your specific air fryer (e.g., Cosori air fryer, Philips, Ninja), you may need to adjust the cooking time by a minute or two to achieve that ideal crispy golden brown crust.
  • Don’t Overfill: While it’s tempting to load up on jam, resist the urge to overfill your pastries. Too much filling, especially near the edges, significantly increases the chance of leaks. Stick to the recommended 1 tablespoon of jam per pastry and ensure that vital ¼-inch border is maintained.
  • Cooling is Key: After air frying, always transfer your pop tarts to a wire rack to cool. This allows air to circulate around them, preventing the bottoms from becoming soggy and helping the pastries maintain their crisp texture. It also ensures the glaze sets beautifully without melting.

Homemade Pop Tart Variations: Get Creative!

One of the greatest joys of making homemade pop tarts in the air fryer is the endless opportunity for customization. While the strawberry jam version is a classic, don’t hesitate to experiment and create your own signature flavors!

  • Explore Different Jam Flavors: Beyond strawberry, a world of fruit fillings awaits! Try making air fryer blueberry pop tarts with blueberry jelly, or switch to tangy raspberry, sweet grape, or a vibrant mixed berry blend. For a more substantial fruit experience, you can also use canned pie fillings (apple, cherry, peach) – just be sure to drain any excess liquid to prevent sogginess.
  • Indulge in Chocolate Creations: Transform your pop tarts into a rich dessert by incorporating chocolate! Add a few chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, or a dollop of creamy peanut butter alongside a chocolate spread like Nutella or a simple melted chocolate ganache. The combination of warm pastry and gooey chocolate is irresistible.
  • Switch Up the Pastry Dough: While refrigerated pie crust is incredibly convenient, you have other options. Puff pastry, found in the freezer section of most grocery stores, will give your pop tarts a wonderfully buttery and extra-flaky texture. The preparation method remains largely the same, but the resulting pastry will be lighter and airier. For an even more “homemade” feel, you can also use your favorite scratch-made pie dough recipe.
  • Make Them a Decadent Dessert: Who says pop tarts are just for breakfast? Serve your warm, freshly air-fried pop tarts topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a dollop of whipped cream, or a drizzle of chocolate sauce for a quick and satisfying pie-like dessert. They make a fantastic last-minute treat for guests!
  • Savory Pop Tart Ideas: For an unconventional twist, venture into savory pop tarts! Fill them with a mixture of shredded cheese and diced ham, or a spoonful of pesto with sun-dried tomatoes and mozzarella. These savory versions make for a unique snack or a quick lunch on the go.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer Pop Tarts

Can you eat pop tarts hot or cold?

Absolutely! The beauty of homemade air fryer pop tarts is their versatility. I personally love them warm, right out of the air fryer, when the crust is at its crispiest and the filling is delightfully gooey. However, they are also perfectly delicious at room temperature or even cold, making them an ideal grab-and-go breakfast or snack for those busy mornings.

Does it matter what size I make them?

For a traditional pop tart experience, aim for rectangular shapes about three inches by five inches. This size is easy to handle and fits well in most air fryer baskets. However, feel free to get creative! You can make them square, round, or even use fun cookie cutters (like stars, hearts, or seasonal shapes) to make them extra special, especially if you’re getting kids involved in the kitchen. Just remember that smaller pop tarts might cook slightly faster, so keep an eye on them.

How do I store leftover pop tarts?

To keep your leftover homemade pop tarts fresh, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. For longer storage, you can freeze them in an airtight sealed storage bag or container for up to 3 months. To reheat, simply thaw frozen pop tarts in the fridge overnight (or for a few hours at room temperature) and then air fry them at 350°F (175°C) for 6-8 minutes, or until they are warmed through and their crusts are crispy again.

What kind of air fryer is best for this recipe?

This recipe works well with most basket-style air fryers, which are fantastic for getting that all-around crispy texture. Larger capacity air fryers will allow you to cook more pop tarts in a single batch, while smaller ones might require cooking in multiple batches. The brand (e.g., Cosori, Ninja, Philips) is less important than ensuring your air fryer is clean and preheated if recommended by your model. Always refer to your air fryer’s manual for specific instructions and recommended preheating times.

Can I use homemade pie crust instead of store-bought?

Absolutely! While refrigerated pie crust offers incredible convenience, if you prefer to make your own pie crust from scratch, it will work beautifully. Just ensure your homemade dough is rolled out to a consistent thickness and chilled adequately before cutting and filling. Using homemade dough adds an extra layer of flavor and texture for those who enjoy the baking process!

Equipment

  • 1 Air Fryer

Ingredients

Pop Tart

  • 1 sheet premade refrigerated pie crust
  • 1/2 cup strawberry jam

Frosting

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon sprinkles
Prevent your screen from going dark

Instructions

  • Remove pie crust from packaging and lay it out flat on a lightly floured surface or on a cutting board. Use a rolling pin, and roll the pie crust into a large rectangular shape on a flat surface, and then using a pizza cutter or knife to cut dough rectangles, about 3×5 inches.
  • Next spoon about 1 tablespoon of jam into the center of each rectangle, gently spreading, leaving about a ¼ inch border around the edges. Be careful to not overfill or it will leak out in your air fryer.
  • Fill a small bowl with warm water and lightly dip your finger into water and slide along the bottom edge piece (this helps glue dough pieces together).
  • Then, fold top piece of pastry to bottom piece. Pinch all edges together and seal them with a fork. Use the fork to poke holes in pastry for ventilation while it cooks (I poked holes in top, middle, and bottom of pop tart for uniformity).
  • Repeat this process until all pieces are filled with strawberry jam. Any trimmed pieces can be combined, rolled out and cut into more 3×5 rectangles and will make 3-4 more full air fryer pop tarts.
  • Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper, and then place pastries in a single layer into basket.
  • Air fry at 350 degrees F for 8-10 minutes, until the edges are crispy golden brown. Allow to cool before glazing or eating pastry.

Notes

Getting kids involved in the kitchen is always fun. Change up the pop tart shape by using a cookie cutter in shapes of animals, flowers or different holiday designs.

You can use an egg wash (one egg beaten and a tablespoon or water in a small bowl). Using a kitchen brush with egg wash around the bottom edge which provides extra adhesion to ensure pop tarts stay completely sealed.

Don’t forget to poke holes in the pastry for ventilation while it cooks. I poke holes in top, middle, and bottom of pop tart for uniformity.
