ESSENTIAL INGREDIENTS
Gathering your ingredients for this air fryer lemon garlic shrimp recipe is simple, and you likely have most of them on hand. The key to a truly flavorful dish lies in using fresh, quality components. Here’s what you’ll need:

- Shrimp: One pound of medium or large, uncooked, and deveined shrimp is ideal. You can use either fresh or frozen shrimp. If using frozen, ensure they are fully thawed and patted dry before marinating to prevent excess water from steaming the shrimp instead of frying them.
- Unsalted Butter, Melted: Butter provides a rich, luxurious base for our flavors. Unsalted butter allows you to control the total sodium content in the dish.
- Fresh Lemon Juice: This is crucial for that bright, tangy flavor. Always opt for freshly squeezed lemon juice over bottled for the best taste. It truly makes a difference!
- Garlic: Approximately 2-3 cloves of fresh garlic, minced. Fresh garlic delivers the most pungent and aromatic flavor, a cornerstone of this recipe. If you don’t have fresh, a teaspoon of garlic powder can be a substitute, but fresh is highly recommended.
- Kosher Salt: Essential for seasoning. Kosher salt has a coarser grain and provides a clean flavor. Adjust to your personal preference.
- Ground Black Pepper: A dash of freshly ground black pepper adds a subtle warmth and complements the other flavors beautifully.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Making this Air Fryer Lemon Garlic Shrimp is incredibly straightforward. Follow these simple steps for perfectly cooked, flavorful shrimp every time:
STEP 1: Prepare the Shrimp
Begin by preparing your shrimp. Carefully remove the shells from each piece. For those who prefer, you can also remove the tails at this stage. If your shrimp are not pre-deveined, take a small fork or a toothpick and gently lift and pull the dark vein out from along the back of each shrimp. This step ensures a clean eating experience.
STEP 2: Marinate the Shrimp
Once your shrimp are prepped and ready, transfer them to a large mixing bowl. Pour in the melted unsalted butter, freshly squeezed lemon juice, minced garlic, kosher salt, and ground black pepper. Use a spoon or your hands to gently toss all the ingredients together. Ensure that each piece of shrimp is thoroughly coated with the flavorful mixture. This short marination step is key to infusing the shrimp with all the delicious lemon and garlic goodness.

STEP 3: Arrange in Air Fryer
Carefully transfer the marinated shrimp from the bowl into your air fryer basket or onto the air fryer tray. It’s crucial to arrange them in a single, even layer. Avoid stacking or overlapping the shrimp, as this can lead to uneven cooking and a less crispy texture. If you have a smaller air fryer, you may need to cook the shrimp in multiple batches. Proper air circulation is key for that perfect air-fried result.

STEP 4: Air Fry to Perfection
Air fry the shrimp at 370 degrees F (188 degrees C) for 6-8 minutes. Cooking times can vary based on your air fryer model, wattage, and the size of your shrimp. Keep a close eye on them; the shrimp are perfectly cooked when they turn a vibrant, bright orange color and are opaque throughout. Avoid overcooking, as this can make them tough. A quick shake of the basket halfway through can promote even cooking.
I typically achieve excellent results with this recipe in my Cosori air fryer. Remember that cooking times might need slight adjustments (1-2 minutes) depending on your specific air fryer’s make and model. Always check for doneness to ensure the best texture.
This savory shrimp is truly delicious when paired with a variety of yummy sides. Consider serving it with air fryer asparagus, air fryer broccoli, or air fryer baked potatoes for a complete and balanced meal. For an indulgent dinner, add an air fryer steak to create a fantastic surf and turf experience!
SERVING SUGGESTIONS AND VARIATIONS
One of the best qualities of this Air Fryer Lemon Garlic Shrimp is its incredible versatility. It can be the star of your meal or a delicious accompaniment. Here are some ideas to inspire you:
- As a Main Meal or Pasta Topper: This shrimp is wonderful on its own, but you can easily toss it into a creamy pasta sauce or serve it over your favorite pasta dish for a quick and elegant shrimp scampi. It also pairs beautifully with risotto or quinoa.
- Lemon Shrimp Tacos: If you’re a fan of citrusy flavors, incorporate this shrimp into air fryer shrimp tacos. The zesty shrimp provides a fantastic base for fresh toppings like avocado, cabbage slaw, and a drizzle of crema.
- Chilled Shrimp Cocktail: For a refreshing appetizer or quick snack, allow the cooked shrimp to chill completely. Serve them with a classic cocktail sauce for a delightful shrimp cocktail that’s perfect for entertaining.
- Meal Prep Powerhouse: Divide the cooked shrimp over a bed of fluffy cooked rice, along with some steamed vegetables, for easy and healthy meal prepping throughout the week. It reheats well or can be enjoyed cold in salads.
- Flavor Customization: Experiment with different seasonings to change up the flavor profile. Try adding a sprinkle of Old Bay seasoning for a classic seafood kick, a pinch of red pepper flakes for a touch of heat, or a medley of Italian seasonings for an herbaceous twist. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce, such as a creamy sriracha mayo or a sweet chili sauce.
- Garnish and Fresh Herbs: A final sprinkle of fresh parsley, dill, or chives can add a pop of color and an extra layer of freshness.

EXPERT AIR FRYING TIPS
Achieving perfectly cooked, juicy air fryer shrimp is easy with a few expert tips:
- Preheat Your Air Fryer: Just like a conventional oven, preheating your air fryer ensures that the shrimp starts cooking immediately at the desired temperature, leading to a more even cook and better texture. A preheated air fryer helps achieve that perfect sear.
- Don’t Overcrowd the Basket: This is perhaps the most crucial tip for any air fryer recipe. Arranging the shrimp in a single layer, without overlapping, allows the hot air to circulate freely around each piece. Overcrowding will steam the shrimp instead of air frying them, resulting in a soggy texture. Cook in batches if necessary.
- Pat Shrimp Dry: Before adding any seasonings or butter, gently pat your shrimp dry with paper towels. Removing excess moisture helps the seasonings adhere better and promotes crispier results.
- Fresh Ingredients for Best Flavor: While convenient, pre-minced garlic or bottled lemon juice won’t deliver the same vibrant, fresh taste as freshly minced garlic cloves and juice from a ripe lemon. Invest in fresh for superior flavor.
- Monitor Cooking Time Closely: Shrimp cooks very quickly. Start checking for doneness at the 5-minute mark. Shrimp is fully cooked when it turns opaque and develops a bright orange or pink color. Overcooked shrimp will become rubbery, so pull them out as soon as they reach that perfect state.
- Garnish for Freshness: Once the shrimp are done, a final squeeze of fresh lemon juice can brighten the flavors even further. Garnish with lemon slices or some freshly chopped fresh parsley or cilantro before serving for an appealing presentation and an extra burst of freshness.
- Deveining Shrimp: Buying shrimp that are already deveined saves a lot of time. However, if you can’t find them prepared this way, you can easily devein them yourself. Use a small knife to make a shallow cut along the back of the shrimp, then use a fork or your fingers to lift and pull out the dark vein.

STORING AND REHEATING AIR FRYER SHRIMP
Proper storage and reheating ensure your delicious lemon garlic shrimp stays tasty and safe to eat:

If you happen to have any leftover shrimp, which is a rare occurrence given how delicious this recipe is, ensure it’s stored properly. Place the cooked shrimp in a sealed or airtight container as soon as it cools down to room temperature. You can safely store it in the refrigerator for about 3-4 days. Cooked shrimp can be enjoyed cold, perhaps tossed into a salad or served as part of a cold appetizer platter. However, if you prefer your shrimp warm, reheating it in the air fryer is the best method to restore its wonderful texture. To reheat, return the shrimp to your air fryer basket and air fry at 380 degrees F (193 degrees C) for 2-4 minutes, or until just heated through. Be cautious not to overcook during reheating, as this can make the shrimp tough.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Absolutely! While I generally prefer raw shrimp for the best texture and flavor, pre-cooked shrimp can certainly be used. Simply toss the cooked shrimp with the butter, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and pepper just as you would with raw shrimp. The main difference will be the cooking time. Since the shrimp is already cooked, you will only need to air fry it for about 3-4 minutes at 370°F (188°C), just until it’s heated through and the flavors have melded. Overcooking pre-cooked shrimp will make it rubbery, so keep a close eye on it.
Yes, frozen raw shrimp works perfectly for this recipe, and I often keep a bag in my freezer for quick meals. To prepare, simply soak the frozen shrimp in a bowl of cold water for about 15-30 minutes, or rinse them under cool running water until they are fully thawed. Once thawed, peel the shrimp (if they have shells) and remember to pat them thoroughly dry with paper towels before marinating and cooking. This step is essential to ensure they air fry rather than steam.
The size of shrimp you use is largely a matter of personal preference, and various sizes work well. For applications like shrimp cocktail or as an addition to pastas and salads, I find medium shrimp (around 31-40 count per pound) to be ideal due to their bite-sized nature. However, if the shrimp is intended to be the main course, such as with this Air Fryer Lemon Garlic Shrimp, I typically opt for large (21-25 count) or jumbo shrimp (16-20 count) as they offer a more substantial and satisfying portion. Just be aware that larger shrimp may require an extra minute or two of cooking time in the air fryer.
Perfectly cooked shrimp will turn an opaque pink or bright orange color throughout. The flesh should be firm but still tender, not rubbery. The tell-tale sign is when the shrimp curl into a loose “C” shape. If they form a tight “O,” they are likely overcooked. Always remove them from the heat as soon as they reach this stage to maintain their succulent texture.
While the air fryer provides a unique crispy-tender texture and quick cooking time, you can certainly adapt this recipe for other methods. To pan-fry, heat a tablespoon of olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated shrimp in a single layer and cook for 1-2 minutes per side, until pink and opaque. To bake, spread the shrimp in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway. Adjust cooking times based on shrimp size and desired doneness.
